National Cathedral

Mr. Abbot Kinney deserves a lot of credit for these photos. He single-handedly made this place photogenic designing the canals that wind through parts of this Los Angeles neighborhood. The beach, that part he didn't have anything to do with.

Moab to Monument Valley

Rocks and the Sun and dead trees and dried river beds have never looked so inviting. I never really thought much of Utah besides that whole religion thing, but it is the most ridiculously beautiful state out there. The back roads through SE Utah will prove it to you.

Loneliest Road to Winnemucca

US 50 through Nevada is apparently known as America's Loneliest Road. I can't imagine anyone refuting this claim. It cuts right though Nevada where most everything is dusty and deteriorating and rocky, but serene and beautiful, if not scary as hell. This lady at a general store in Eureka, NV told me to take a back road from the back road to Winnemucca if I wanted to go to Oregon. More of the same, but still, US 50 seemed lonelier.

Where the West Was Lost

Dilapidated saloons, beat up homesteads, crumbling pioneer rock homes are much of what's left capitalism's history along the Utah and Nevada back roads. Considered ghost towns, but most of them still have people living in them, riding around on 4-wheelers, partying like it's 1899.

Goblin Valley

This park is the miniature, Fisher-Price version of Monument Valley, Zion and Canyonlands in one little State Park, way off the beaten path in Utah. Goblin Valley. I'm going to go ahead and declare it the best spot you never heard of.

Nevada Outpost

Photos from a stop in eastern Nevada, a few dusty, gravelly miles off of the "lonliest road", US 50. I only needed a water, but if one were in rural Nevada and needed a semi truck, an El Camino, some buffalo or a mean looking junk yard dog then this place is a goldmine.

Out West at Night, Alone

Long exposures taken while aimlessly following gravel roads after midnight through Grand Mesa National Forest and Grand Basin National Park. Nothing can fully capture the spookiness of walking alone in the wilderness late at night, and these Colorado and Nevada landmarks were plenty haunted by the full moon and whipping winds.

In 2003, I received an artist's enrichment grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women to produce this body of work.

Each of the women (and one man) is a friend of mine (if they weren't before, they became intimate friends during the process of photographing, talking and painting).

They are all artists; Visual, writers, dancers and a filmmaker.

The man is a sculptor, photographer, political activist.

I am grateful to all of these people who so graciously gave me complete freedom to paint their images.

Lewis Hine : Newsies

Working as an investigative photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC), Lewis Hine (1874-1940) documented working and living conditions of children in the United States between 1908 and 1924. The NCLC photos are useful for the study of labor, reform movements, children, working class families, education, public health, urban and rural housing conditions, industrial and agricultural sites, and other aspects of urban and rural life in America in the early twentieth century.

This transforms into an abstract, post-apocalyptic journey from destroyed wharehouses in Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, to abandoned textile processing in upstate New York. The Caveman Laboratory exhibit provides a fitting soundtrack to an abstract, low-budget adventure story.
